S/SW blog philosophy -

I credit favorite writers and public opinion makers.

A lifelong Democrat, my comments on Congress, the judiciary and the presidency are regular features.

My observations and commentary are on people and events in politics that affect the USA or the rest of the world, and stand for the interests of peace, security and justice.

Should Church & State Separate or Divorce?

Linda Greenhouse, writing for the New York Times, discusses the US Supreme Court's recent decisions regarding display of the Ten Commandments.
For hundreds of years our nation has operated with the powerful doctrine of the "separation of church and state." The word "separate" can be either a verb (set or keep apart), or an adjective (detached or not shared with another). Is it any wonder that the court sent down two seemingly contradictory decisions?
My own feeling is that the founding fathers had it right. Church and state were never married. Is today's state of affairs what amounts to a "common-law" marriage, an unworkable blurring of the legitimate but different roles of religion and of government?
