Former and current U.S. presidents and their spouses are gathering at the National Cathedral this morning to pay their last respects to former president Gerald Ford who died last week. He lived for more than nine decades, and he lived an honorable life. "Jerry" Ford was admired by most of us and dearly loved by many. The population of former presidents has been much diminished by his loss.
The ceremony of respect for one of our former leaders, a state funeral, is always comforting and grounding for the nation. "Republican" and "Democrat" are labels that mostly disappear. Perhaps it will serve us well as Congress reconvenes on Thursday. We hope so.
This ancient place symbolizes for me how important it is to honor the past, know those who came long before us, exhibit craftsmanship, and build for the long haul. I have sought to do all this since 2005. While speaking out of very Progressive political leanings, I still maintain a deep love of the Constitution.

A lifelong Democrat, my comments on Congress, the judiciary and the presidency are regular features.
My observations and commentary are on people and events in politics that affect the USA or the rest of the world, and stand for the interests of peace, security and justice.
