Atlantis has docked with the International Space Station. Five years ago today Islamic fundamentalist radicals attacked the United States. Yesterday Vice-President Cheney again appeared on Meet the Press defending the invasion of Iraq and attacking war critics. At the same time, a unity government is now possible in Palestine. And last, I saw a television special Sunday evening that gave me heart: Last night the Discovery Channel broadcast a very special program, featuring a town meeting, hosted by Ted Koppel.
The good news - The confluence of all these events started me thinking that, even on this dark anniversary day, things in the news continue to look very positive. Peace continues to reign in space as astronauts from Canada, Russia, Germany and the United States risk their lives with each other in a little community in orbit around the tiny planet, Earth. And it looks as if the two factions in Palestine will finally be able to govern together. Justice may happen because the United States has gathered 14 "High Value" Islamist radical detainees from secret prisons around the world. They have been sent to Guantanamo for possible trial. We can see that the Vice-President's credibility is still suspect. And there are helpful television broadcasts and local ceremonies that are helping us continue to process the nation's grief over the 9/11 tragedy. And, as last night's town meeting showed, important people of very different political perspectives have begin a long overdue national debate on what to do next. Let us hope that the dialogue continues.
Comings-together are good today . . . so far.
