S/SW blog philosophy -

I credit favorite writers and public opinion makers.

A lifelong Democrat, my comments on Congress, the judiciary and the presidency are regular features.

My observations and commentary are on people and events in politics that affect the USA or the rest of the world, and stand for the interests of peace, security and justice.

Troubles in the Democratic Party

Linked to the title is a very interesting recent article written by Davis Sirota in the publication In these times. Included in my 10/17 Common Dreams newsletter, Partisan Way Syndrome: The Left Falls Victim to a Debilitating Affliction is an excellent analysis of what may be wrong with my party.
One of the things that drew me to it is the author's clever use of psychological metaphors, such as hallucination, delirium, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Since that is my field, I read further. And I encourage my readers to visit this link and see what you think about his plea for focusing more our ideology. Rhetoric is important is crucial but should not be central. By itself, concentrating on how the message is framed is not getting it done. Sirota argues, rightly that substance is still more important than form.
This morning Sirota has written another intriguing article on the differences between liberals and progressives.
