S/SW blog philosophy -

I credit favorite writers and public opinion makers.

A lifelong Democrat, my comments on Congress, the judiciary and the presidency are regular features.

My observations and commentary are on people and events in politics that affect the USA or the rest of the world, and stand for the interests of peace, security and justice.

Libby indicted

Many of us want to celebrate, and with good reason. But Atrios reminds us that these are very serious days. He quotes a very good statement on the matter of the CIA leak scandal by Senator Ted Kennedy. The senator calls it "an ominous day for America." (linked to title)
Here is the BBC take on the Libby indictment story. They mention that "Opposition Democrats think they have the administration on the run, says the BBC's Washington correspondent Justin Webb.
Defeated presidential candidate John Kerry has complained of corruption at the highest levels of government, far from the honour and dignity America was promised."

The NYT carries this story containing a good deal of Democratic reaction to the Libby indictment. A number of Democratic legislators are calling for a Senate investigation of the CIA leak scandal. Representative Henry Waxman, the senior Democrat on the Government Reform Committee, has sent a letter to his Republican Chairman Tom Davis, with such a request. Senator Jay Rockefeller has similar ideas:
"Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, senior Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, also said additional inquiry was necessary. "The fact is that at any time the Senate Intelligence Committee pursued a line of questioning that brought us close to the White House, our efforts were thwarted," Mr. Rockefeller said."
I doubt if any formal hearings will happen. But I predict that Representative John Conyers may again convene his Basement Hearings with members of the Democratic caucus in SRO attendance. The Democrats absolutely must begin to assert real leadership, for the entire country's sake.

As you are probably aware of is the fact that the democrats have been thwarted by every effort by the GOP, just goes to show how much the GOP are only interested in partisan politics.
They are not concerned with the welfare of our country, the war, the citizens of any of the numerous hurricanes we've encountered, the unaccounted money in Iraq, the list goes on and on.
I hope and pray that we can finally get some traction on this scandal, which one you might ask. Let's start with the most damaging one to finally see the light of day, the "Leaking of Classified Information" of exposing a covert CIA official, which in the long run, was a diversion to take us to war on "Cherry-picked Intelligence".

Yes, the list of issues ignored by leading Republicans is very long.
And, as you said, they seem to resemble the "Teflon President" of years ago, Ronald Reagan. Nothing bad seemed stick to him. I used to not think Democratic leaders were the ones that were supposed to come up with answers. But I've changed my mind; they need to provide solutions and ideas in this terrible empty breech created by the Republicans.
