It seems to me that there might be a parallel situation involving the Democratic party in the United States and the French rejection of the proposed European Union Constitution. Dissatisfied French voters, many of whom are economically disadvantaged, came out to vote with the majority against President Chirac's pro-constitution position. And he is now potentially in danger of going out of power, accused of being out of ideas and not standing for much that matters to the political center. Does that sound familiar? The reason our Democrats are out of power now is because we failed to strongly articulate a stance with which the mainstream center could identify. The gap between rich and poor continues to widen in what I predict will result in more and more class conflict. The European Union has likewise found itself unable to reconcile the have's and have-not's dissimilar needs.
There was a time when our nation could compassionately help the helpless without bankrupting the rich. That seems like such a long time ago . . .
This ancient place symbolizes for me how important it is to honor the past, know those who came long before us, exhibit craftsmanship, and build for the long haul. I have sought to do all this since 2005. While speaking out of very Progressive political leanings, I still maintain a deep love of the Constitution.
